One-to-one private tutoring

Quiet focus, steady progress.

Patient tutoring in maths, English and the sciences for primary and secondary learners, at your kitchen table or online. We work at the learner's pace and aim for real understanding.

  • Primary to final-year secondary
  • In-home or online
  • Short written notes after each session
Subjects

Support where it's needed most

Each learner starts with a clear picture of what already makes sense and what doesn't yet. Sessions then fill those gaps while keeping up with current classwork.

Mathematics

From number sense and times tables to algebra, functions and exam problem-solving. We build the reasoning first, then the speed.

  • Primary
  • Lower secondary
  • Senior

English & essay writing

Reading comprehension, grammar and structured writing. Learners practise planning an argument and then shaping it into clear, confident essays.

  • Reading
  • Writing
  • Text analysis

Sciences

General science, chemistry and physics. We make abstract ideas concrete with diagrams, worked examples and plenty of "why does that happen?"

  • General science
  • Chemistry
  • Physics
How it works

A simple, unhurried start

No long commitments up front. Each step gives you a clearer view before deciding on the next.

  1. Introductory chat

A relaxed conversation with parent and learner about goals, worries and what school currently looks like.

  2. Learning snapshot

A gentle first session that maps strengths and gaps. It is not a test, just a way to find the right starting point.

  3. Weekly sessions

A consistent rhythm of focused work, balanced between catching up, keeping pace and building independence.

  4. Progress notes

A few lines after every session covering what was covered, what clicked and what to practise before next time.

About the tutor

Hello, I'm Opal.

I started tutoring because I kept meeting capable students who had quietly decided they were "just not good at" a subject. Most of the time, a single missed step was holding everything else up.

My sessions are calm, structured and a little bit curious. We slow down, find where things stopped making sense, and rebuild from there until the learner can explain it back in their own words.

  • Questions are always welcome, especially the "silly" ones.
  • Understanding comes before memorising.
  • Parents stay informed without hovering over sessions.

Questions

Good to know

Can't see your question here? Add it to the enquiry form and it will be answered in the reply.

What happens if we need to miss a session?

Life happens. Just let me know as early as you can and we'll find another time that week or pick things up at the next session.

How involved should parents be?

As much or as little as you like. Most families read the short notes after each session and have a brief check-in every few weeks.

Do we need to buy any materials?

No. Sessions use the learner's current schoolwork alongside practice material I prepare. A notebook just for tutoring is helpful but optional.

What's needed for online sessions?

A laptop or tablet with a camera, a stable connection and a quiet spot. A link and a simple setup guide are sent before the first session.
